Separating the shortwave and longwave components of greenhouse gas radiative forcing

چکیده
Many important greenhouse gases (including water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone) absorb solar radiation. When gas concentrations change, this absorption exerts a radiative forcing that modifies the thermal infrared (‘longwave’) which is predominant for most (ozone being major exception). The nature of differs from longwave in several ways. For example, sign instantaneous can differ between tropopause top-of-atmosphere, gases. In addition, significant part be manifested longwave, following stratospheric temperature adjustment, counteract or enhance forcing. Here examined via mixture idealised more realistic calculations, consider effect perturbations ozone. An apparent contradiction dioxide resolved; it shown to negative, reducing net by about 2.3%. relevance work effective concept also discussed.

Recent and future trends in synthetic greenhouse gas radiative forcing
Atmospheric measurements show that emissions of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons are now the primary drivers of the positive growth in synthetic greenhouse gas (SGHG) radiative forcing. We infer recent SGHG emissions and examine the impact of future emissions scenarios, with a particular focus on proposals to reduce HFC use under the Montreal Protocol. If these proposals a...
متن کاملLongwave Radiative Forcing in Global Climate Models
Long wave radiation (LWR) forcing is determined in atmospheric global climate models (AGCMs) by a heating algorithm embedded in the model. These algorithms compute vertical heating rate (HR) profiles from profiles of temperature (T), moisture (Q), clouds, and minor atmospheric constituents; thus the HRs depend on the vertical structure of the input variables plus internal physics. The sensitivi...
متن کاملEstimation of diurnal shortwave dust aerosol radiative forcing during PRIDE
[1] Using measured and derived aerosol properties from the Puerto Rico Dust Experiment (PRIDE), a four-stream broadband radiative transfer model is used to calculate the downward shortwave irradiance (DSWI) at the surface and the shortwave irradiance at the top of atmosphere (TOA). The results of the calculated DSWI are compared against pyranometer measurements from the Surface Measurements For...
متن کاملEnhanced Shortwave Cloud Radiative Forcing Due to Anthropogenic Aerosols
It has been suggested, originally by Twomey (SCEP, 1970), that anthropogenic aerosols in the troposphere can influence the microphysical properties of clouds and in turn their reflectivity (albedo), thereby exerting a radiative influence on climate. This chapter presents the theoretical basis for of this so-called indirect forcing and reviews pertinent observational evidence and climate model c...
متن کاملDecadal vegetation changes in a northern peatland, greenhouse gas fluxes and net radiative forcing
Thawing permafrost in the sub-Arctic has implications for the physical stability and biological dynamics of peatland ecosystems. This study provides an analysis of how permafrost thawing and subsequent vegetation changes in a sub-Arctic Swedish mire have changed the net exchange of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2) and CH4 over the past three decades. Images of the mire (ca. 17 ha) and sur...
